You're right to question it, but don't be afraid of it. Sometimes debt consolidation companies offer credit counseling to go with their plans, and that portion of the service might be what's free. But that doesn't mean that you won't get the same high-quality debt consolidation programs you could get from a company that doesn't offer free debt consolidation services. The quality of your debt consolidation program, whether it's from free debt consolidation services or other debt consolidation services does depend on the reliability of the company, so you have to do a thorough background check on any debt consolidation company you choose, free or not. One way you can do this is call your creditors and see if the company you're interested in is one they have worked with before and would work with again or not.
